Putting a tarp or some other form of heavy plastic sheeting under the gravel instead of landscape fabric can be an appealing alternative in some cases.

What to use instead of tarp. Water all the soil thoroughly. Whether rain or condensation cause it, water under a tarp is usually bad news. If your tarp is the right size and has gromets then you could use pegs to hold it in place.

Putting a tarp or some other form of heavy plastic sheeting under the gravel instead of landscape fabric can be an appealing alternative in some cases. It’s a little more expensive than a tarp, but way lighter and easier to deal with. Because they breathe, canvas tarps resist condensation.

These can be special fabric or metal snow stakes, plastic shopping bags filled with snow and buried, or even pieces of gear that you freeze in place. This will keep the tarp from blowing away and help seal in the soil's moisture. A vinyl tarp will not only contain water in your pond, but it will also help keep debris out for easier maintenance.

If you want to “rough it”, be our guest and pitch a tarp to use as shelter. Smaller tent footprints will be much cheaper than large ones. I really like my alps mountaineering’s tent floor saver.

Most roofers will use screws when attaching the tarp’s anchor boards to the roof. What can i use instead of tarp? Use a rototiller to a depth of 2 to 3 inches to mix the fumigant with the soil.

However, if you want to avoid making additional punctures in the roof, you can use an adhesive roof tarp. Whether you use a sewing machine or a needle and thread, try to make the fabric overlay as little as possible. Use a rototiller on the soil to a depth of 2 inches.

If your tarp is much bigger then fold. For more information, check out my article on how to make your own diy tarp canopy. Just sticking a random tarp under your tent isn’t going to help when it comes to rain.

Snow is a different story and much easier to use a tarp on. For a tarp to actually help with waterproofing it needs to be customized to your tent. We are proud to make all our custom tarps in the usa to fit your needs.

However, you can use a vinyl tarp as a pond liner. They’re slightly more expensive, but way easier to use than a tarp. Backpackers should use a tent footprint instead of a tarp.

We don’t want it to be super bunched up and mess with how we stretch the tarp out, we just don’t want any opportunity for the tear to get any bigger. That means you can potentially cover the entire area under your landscaping with a single sheet, leaving no seams where weeds can penetrate. However, if you choose not to use a tarp, you could opt to use a thin layer of sand and top it up with a carpet foam or carpet felt.

Putting a tarp or some other form of heavy plastic sheeting under the gravel instead of landscape fabric can be an appealing alternative in some cases. Any bunching of the tarp will make the lumpy to lie on. However, tarps are usually used for shelter under “survivalist” situations. If you are going to be in a shape, make sure that the a is still angled bac k (see the drawing below).

Sand has been the most common base for pools. Instead of using tarp repair tape, just go ahead and sew that tear completely shut. It might actually cause additional problems as water pools.

This is also a great option for tarp camping in wet areas, as water runs right down the side of the tarp and onto the ground (just make sure it’s not uphill from you!). Cover the moist soil with the tarp, weighing down the edges with rocks or wood. If you plan on backpacking you should use a dedicated tent footprint instead.

For a diy tarp, you can probably get away with an investment of less than $30 depending on the material you want to use. Other insulation, such as vermiculite, makes a perfect addition to your base. Those that can be used, need to be waterproof, thick, and uv resistant.

So, a tarp made from canvas or polyethylene would be a great tent footprint material.
